April 25th

It is that time again SJA. Our annual SJA Spring Fundraiser is here. Forms and information were sent home. This year, we are raising money for technology and our goal is $9000. If we raise $3000 as a school we get to wrap a teacher in toilet paper! If we raise $6000 as a school we get to silly string a teacher! If we reach our goal of $9000, students will get to water balloon the teachers! There will be a number of events happening throughout the week and amazing prizes for students who participate, as well as a grand prize, which includes a movie and pizza party!! Some of the daily prizes include a gum day, silly string a teacher, an extra casual day, sit on your teachers chair for the day, and being able to pie Mr. Sawatsky in the face!

For a pledge of $35 or more, your child will be able to attend a class trip to Kidsports Indoor Playground on Thursday, May 11. Thank you so much in advance for your participation. We greatly appreciate it! The pledge form and money is due by Friday, April 28.

Summer uniforms have begun. Summer uniform consists of grey pants/shorts/skirt, the white polo t-shirt, and navy blue socks/stockings.

Uniform reminders: JK- Grade 2 gym uniforms are to be worn on Mondays and Wednesdays. After a weekend where Monday is a holiday students will return to school on the Tuesday in their dress uniform.

Calendar- the special helpers put up the date, counts down to 100 days of school, and tells us what the weather is like today.

UOI with language focus- Today we had a discussion about chores and why we think they should or should not be done at home. Students decided their opinion, completed their organizer and wrote a letter home to tell their ideas.

Agenda -

  • spelling sentences
  • Spring Fundraiser trip money and form
  • Casual Day Weds
  • Sign and return spelling test

Math- Today we continued our new measurement unit on area and perimeter. We talked about how to chose a non-standard unit to measure based on what we are measuring. For example if you wanted to measure your desk you would not chose paper clips to complete the task as it would take you a very long time. Instead you would chose something longer like straws. Students had to look at pictures of items in their books and then decide what unit they would use to measure those items with. Students then had to explain in pictures and words what they would chose to measure ME with! Paper clips or straws? Students then got to measure me!

UOI -  today we learned about the Shekere, a beautiful musical instrument made out of gourds, used in Africa. Students learned how to pronounce it, how it is made (takes one year to dry out) and how it is played. We watched a short video on the instrument being played, we used tablets to google pictures of gourds and shekeres. Then we began to create our own!

Daily 5 - Today we worked on putting stories into sequential order.
Dear SJA Families,
The Grade 6 class invites you to attend the Exhibition on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 9 am to 11 am, or from 6 pm to 8 pm in the auditorium.
The Exhibition is the culminating task of the IB Primary Years Programme. It is where students work collaboratively to explore a local issue that interests them.  This year’s Grade 6s have chosen the following topics to explore:
Terrorism
Elder Abuse/Neglect
Physician-Assisted Dying
Developmental Disabilities
Animal Abuse/Neglect
Immigration
Garbage Pollution
Climate Change
Crime
Some great reasons why you should attend if your child is NOT in Grade 6 include:
·         Supporting and celebrating with the Grade 6s
·         Learning about these issues
·         Being aware of what will be expected of your child when they are in Grade 6
We hope to see you then.
Sincerely,
The Grade 6 Class
