Day 59

Congrats to our Thinker winner!



Language 
Today in language we wrote our spelling paragraph test. They will be marked and handed back for Monday. Together we came up with a list of success criteria to go over before we submit our test 

Inquiry into Cultures 
We began to learn about different winter celebrations. We looked through Hanukkah books and coloured and cut out a Menorah. 


Gym
We used this time to visit the Grade 5 Ancient Civilizations exhibition












Math 
Today we worked on a subtraction strategy - counting forward.
Ex. 13-7 - start at 7 and stop counting at 13 - track each count with a finger. How many fingers are up is the answer

Day 58

Language 
Today in language we wrote our reflection for our last page of the report card.  Students followed this template:
My favourite thing I learned this term was _________. One thing I can tell you about it is _______________. My favourite field trip was going to The ___________. My goal for next term is to ___________.   





Inquiry into Cultures 
We finished our self assessment for our immigration unit summative 









Yesterday students were introduced to our new unit about celebrations around the world. Today we discussed some of our own traditions:

Mila told us a traditional Polish prayer they do in Polish language for dinner 
Simrin shared a traditional prayer that they say in Punjabi before bed to hope for good dreams 
Aayan - shared that Indian people dont clap at the end of their prayers because it is considered disrespectful
Victoria - shared a traditional Russian prayer for Christmas, she spoke it in Russian! 
Ezzah - Shared a traditional before bed prayer in Urdu 
Arya - Shared that her family has sleep overs with her whole family on Christmas eve and they open gifts together in the morning 
Marloe - shared their secret santa tradition 
Ayen - He told us how on Diwali they get LOTS of big fireworks and presents. 
Kai shared how they celebrate Chinese New Year - and how every year has an animal - 2012 is the pig 
Kara told us about gingerbread cookies and decorating her tree
Omar - told us about Eid and gong to other peoples homes and getting presents
Nimrata told us about how instead of coal they get underwear! 
Eric shared about Christmas how he opens presents on Christmas Eve and family visits and exchanges gifts 
Alyaan - tells us how he is always the first one up and how he wears a Santa outfit. How he says hoho to everyone. 
Surina shared how they do not have stockings but instead all things are under the tree.

Day 57

Language 
Today in language we continued to focus on writing an explanation of a game. We looked at our rough draft read it over and edited it for mistakes to do with spelling, punctuation and capitals. We then wrote a good copy of our explanation of how to play a game. 

Math 
Today students learned how to use an addition chart to solve addition equations. 

Inquiry into Cultures 
Today students were introduced to our new unit about celebrations around the world. 

Students wrote their wonders about this unit and placed them on our wonder wall

We then watched a video to learn about Christmas around the world:

Day 56

Book Fair 
Today those who brought money chose their items and those who didn't created a wish list to bring home tonight.








Language 
Today in language we focus on writing an explanation of a game. We looked at an example, our explanation anchor chart and our sentence starter anchor chart. We then created our rough draft of a game explanation. 


Math 
Today students completed their pre-test for our upcoming unit on addition and subtraction. 

Inquiry into Immigration 
Today students looked through their UOI folders and picked pieces of work to place in their IB Binders. Students had to pick 4 pieces 
1. My best work
2. Something I worked my hardest on 
3. A way I showed a learner profile
4. Something I need to improve on


Here are the girls teaching our Christmas concert dance to the boys. We need everyone to be practicing each night at home in order to be ready in two weeks. Thank you for your cooperation and support everyone.
