Students completed their spelling work out book for the words of the week (see right side of blog).
They worked on long e and i sounds, rhyming words and recognizing one and two syllable words.
Inquiry into Cultures
Students continued to learn about Chinese New Year, today they learned about the zodiac! They learned about the importance of the zodiac to the Chinese culture. They then looked to find out their Year sign and wrote about it how it is correct and incorrect about our personalities . We also looked to find the Year sign for 2020.
Once complete they worked on a word search with different Chinese New Year Vocabulary.
Don't forget to send in your cultural artifact for tomorrow! We will be doing a three day art activity for our final art mark on the report card.

Inquiry into Math
Students learned a math strategy for SUBTRACTING double digit numbers today. You break apart the second number into tens and ones.

Standard Algorithm - standard procedure for adding and subtracting using carrying over and borrowing.

In our current unit, we are learning about a range of cultures from around the world. For an in-class artwork assignment we want to use an artifact (from our own cultural background) and use our fine art skills to ‘draw what you can see’.
We kindly ask that your child brings in an artifact from their culture to sketch. This artifact should be able to comfortably fit on your child’s desk.
Artifacts can include but are not limited to the following:
- Mask
- Pottery
- Dolls/Figurines
- Coin
- Religious artifact (eg. icon)
- Jewelry
Please bring your artifact by Tuesday, January 14th.
Artifacts will be returned at the end of this unit in January.
