Inquiry into Simple Machines
Today students tested their vehicles on different surfaces of an inclined plane. Students were asked to make an estimate in centimetres for each of the following surfaces
- plain paper
- aluminum foil
- wax paper
- sandpaper
We then sent our vehicles with the medicine down the inclined plane and measured how far they travelled. We then recorded their length of travel in our booklets.
We noticed that all of our cars travelled differently based on the surface. Some of us found our car travelled better on the plain paper while a different group found theirs travelled better on the wax paper. One group even found theirs travelled best on the sandpaper! We talked about why this could happen and about how the position of the wheels, weight and decorations on our cars can change things. We even talked about what aerodynamic means!
