Day 12

Inquiry into Language
Students reviewed proper paragraph writing. We discussed how you must have an opening statement, the body using sentence starters and your conclusion. We discussed how you need to have capitals and periods. We then brainstormed sentence starters we could use.

Once we were done our brainstorm students were given the prompt One time I had to make an important decision about . . .

They were required to copy the sentence (opening sentence) fill in the blank and then give me the body and a conclusion. Students were provided with dictionaries to help them spell words they did not know.

Here is what some of us wrote:

Inquiry into Citizenship
Students reviewed what voting was and the learned key terms. We moved on to discuss laws and rules within a community. We read the story:

We talked about laws/rules in our school community, our home community and neighbourhood community. We talked about the people who help to make rules and who help to keep them enforced. We came to notice that no matter where we are or what community we are in it is always our job to follow and help to keep rules enforced. Next we talked about what things could happen if we didn't follow rules at school, home, the community - students came up with good answers like being sent to the principal's office, getting grounded, going to jail or receiving a fine.
Students then thought about a law they would like to have enforced in their home, school or community. They began to draw a poster to explain their ideas.

Math
Today we talked about greater than and less than. We learned that there is a very hungry number alligator on the loose! He only likes to eat nice, large, juicy and fat numbers!!!!!! We then learned how to make the symbols based on making sure the alligator was always eating the big number!
We also looked at ordering numbers in terms of greatest to least and least to greatest.

Here is the chart we used to help us

Reading Buddies

Today we got our reading buddy folders! Inside was a short story with comprehension questions to answer. We completed these with the assistance of our reading buddies.
